New short stay mental health unit for TQEH
6 December 2016
A new $3 million short stay mental health unit will be purpose built at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH), helping to ensure that mental health consumers are able to access care faster.
The unit will provide consumers with acute care for up to 72 hours before they are transferred to a ward, discharged, or moved to an appropriate community setting. It will be co-located with Emergency Department to provide a therapeutic environment for people in distress, while improving patient flow.
Containing eight beds, the facility will be designed with the flexibility to increase future capacity to ten beds.
A working group of medical, nursing and allied health professionals will advise on the most appropriate layout and model of care for the new unit. Its recommendations are expected to be finalised and made available for consultation before the end of this year, while the unit is scheduled for completion by the end of 2017.
